Succulent Care
Choosing the Right Pot for Succulents

Drainage First
The single non-negotiable is a real drainage hole. Without it, water pools and roots rot within weeks.
Material
- Terracotta -- breathable, wicks moisture, the safest choice for beginners.
- Ceramic / glazed -- pretty but holds water longer; water less often.
- Plastic -- light and cheap; let soil dry fully between drinks.
Size
One size up from the root ball. A pot far too large stays wet and invites rot. Shallow pots suit rosettes; deep pots suit long roots like aloe.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use a pot without holes?
A:
Only with a nested plastic liner you lift out to drain -- risky for beginners.
Q: Terracotta dries too fast -- help?
A:
Mix in a little more soil and water slightly more often.
Q: Do I need a saucer?
A:
Only if you empty it 10 minutes after watering so roots never sit in water.
Right pot plus gritty mix equals success. Pair with the watering calculator.
