What DWC Is

Deep Water Culture suspends plant roots in a nutrient solution that is continuously aerated by an air stone. It is the simplest active hydroponic system and perfect for beginners.

You Need

  • A dark bucket or tub (light causes algae)
  • A net pot and lid
  • An air pump and air stone
  • Hydroponic A/B nutrient
  • A seedling or cutting with roots

Steps

  1. Mix nutrient to label strength in the reservoir.
  2. Set the air stone running -- roots must never sit in still water.
  3. Place the plant in the net pot so the roots dangle into the solution.
  4. Keep the solution around 65–70°F (18–21°C).
  5. Top up and re-test pH weekly.

Q: How often change the solution?

A:

Every 1–2 weeks, or when it goes cloudy.

Q: Can I grow anything?

A:

Leafy greens and herbs love it; fruiting plants are harder.
