Hydroponic Growing
Deep Water Culture: Step by Step

What DWC Is
Deep Water Culture suspends plant roots in a nutrient solution that is continuously aerated by an air stone. It is the simplest active hydroponic system and perfect for beginners.
You Need
- A dark bucket or tub (light causes algae)
- A net pot and lid
- An air pump and air stone
- Hydroponic A/B nutrient
- A seedling or cutting with roots
Steps
- Mix nutrient to label strength in the reservoir.
- Set the air stone running -- roots must never sit in still water.
- Place the plant in the net pot so the roots dangle into the solution.
- Keep the solution around 65–70°F (18–21°C).
- Top up and re-test pH weekly.
Frequently Asked Questions

A:
Without oxygen the roots drown and rot.
Q: How often change the solution?
A:
Every 1–2 weeks, or when it goes cloudy.
Q: Can I grow anything?
A:
Leafy greens and herbs love it; fruiting plants are harder.
