Less Is More

Succulents are light feeders. Too much fertiliser causes soft, stretched, discoloured growth and weak roots.

The Routine

  • Use a diluted cactus fertiliser at quarter to half strength.
  • Feed once a month in spring and summer only.
  • Skip feeding entirely in autumn and winter.

How to Apply

Water the plant first, then apply the weak feed so roots are not shocked. Never let dry fertiliser touch the leaves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use normal houseplant food?

A:

Yes, but at quarter strength; full strength burns.

Q: My succulent grew pale and soft -- why?

A:

Likely over-fed; flush the soil with plain water.

Q: Do new plants need food?

A:

No -- wait a month after repotting.

Under-feeding rarely kills; over-feeding often does. Log feeds in the care schedule tool.
