Hydroponic Growing
NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) Explained

What NFT Is
NFT flows a thin film of nutrient solution continuously down sloped channels; plant roots dangle into the film and absorb food and oxygen. No growing medium is needed at the roots.
The Setup
- Sloped PVC or food-grade channels.
- A reservoir with a pump on a timer.
- Net pots holding plants at the channel top.
- A return pipe back to the reservoir.
Pros and Cons
Pros: space-efficient, low medium cost, fast growth. Cons: a pump failure can kill plants within hours -- reliability matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need growing medium?
A:
Just a little at the crown (rockwool or clay) to anchor the seedling.
Q: Is it hard to build?
A:
Moderate; the slope and pump are the key details.
Q: Best crops?
A:
Leafy greens and herbs; not fruiting plants.
