Hydroponic Growing
Preventing Algae in Hydroponic Systems

Why Algae Appears
Algae need light and nutrients -- exactly what an open, lit reservoir provides. Left alone it steals food and breeds pests.
Prevention
- Block light -- use an opaque bucket and a lid with only the net-pot hole open.
- Keep roots dark -- line exposed pipes.
- Clean between crops -- scrub and rinse the system.
- Avoid over-feeding -- excess nutrients feed algae too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I already have algae -- now what?
A:
Block all light, change the solution, and clean the surfaces.
Q: Is a little algae harmful?
A:
Mostly cosmetic, but it competes with your plant and can harbour gnats.
Dark equals clean in hydroponics. Build the habit with the care schedule tool.
