Plant Pests & Diseases
Sunburn vs Pest Damage: Telling Them Apart

Sunburn
Dry, bleached, or crispy brown patches -- usually on the side facing the window, often after a sudden move into hot sun. The damage is fixed and does not spread.
Pest Damage
Yellow stippling, tiny holes, webbing, or sticky residue that appears and worsens over time. Pests move and multiply.
The Quick Test
If damage is static and one-sided, it is sun. If it spreads or you see bugs/webbing, it is pests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can sunburn look like yellowing?
A:
Yes, bleached patches can yellow; location (sun side) is the clue.
Q: Should I cut burnt leaves?
A:
Only if fully dead; partly burnt leaves still photosynthesise.
Q: Move the plant out of sun entirely?
A:
No -- acclimate to bright indirect, not full dark.
Right diagnosis saves the wrong treatment. Cross-check with the pest identifier.
