Build a PVC Vertical Planter in an Hour
Cut a 100 mm PVC pipe to 90 cm, drill four 70 mm planting holes spaced 22 cm apart, cap both ends, and mount it to studs with two U brackets. Fill with a 60 percent coco coir, 30 percent perlite, 10 percent compost mix, water from the top, and grow shallow root crops like strawberries, lettuce, and trailing herbs.
My first vertical garden fell off the wall. I had screwed a plastic gutter into drywall with 6 mm anchors and loaded it with wet soil. What You Need Before You Cut Anything

- One 100 mm end cap for the bottom, one for the top (or a 90 degree elbow if you want a top fill neck).
- Two 100 mm saddle or U brackets, preferably the metal kind rated for 15 kg each.

- A bag of coco coir, a bag of perlite, and a scoop of compost.
- Wood screws 50 mm long and wall anchors rated for at least 10 kg.

How Do I Lay Out the Holes So Plants Do Not Crowd?
Mark four holes down the pipe, not five. Crowding is the usual failure. Space the centers 22 cm apart, starting 12 cm up from the bottom cap. That leaves a solid 10 cm base section to catch the wettest mix and a 12 cm cap at the top for the fill neck. A 70 mm hole fits a 12 cm pot or a bare rooted plant with room to spread.
Drill each hole with the pipe clamped in a vice. Go slow on the last millimeter or the PVC tears. Deburr the edge with a file so you do not slice a root or a finger. The Growing Mix Is the Real Secret
Do not use garden soil. It compacts in a vertical pipe, blocks drainage, and drowns the lower plants while the top stays dry. I blend by volume: 60 percent coco coir, 30 percent perlite, 10 percent finished compost. That mix holds water without turning to mud and stays light at roughly 0.4 kg per liter.
Fill from the top after you mount the pipe, not before. Wet mix is heavy and awkward to lift. Pack gently, do not ram it, and leave the top 3 cm loose. What Grows Well in a Wall Pipe?
Shallow root crops only. This is a 100 mm pipe, not a raised bed. The winners I have grown:
- Strawberries, both June bearing and everbearing, one plant per hole.
- Lettuce and cut and come again greens, two seedlings per hole.
- Trailing herbs like thyme and oregano that spill from the lower holes.
- Epipremnum aureum if you want foliage instead of food, grown in the same mix and trimmed like the water pothos method.
Skip tomatoes, peppers, and anything with a taproot. They need 30 cm of soil depth minimum and will stall in a pipe. Match the crop to the container or you waste a season.
How Do I Mount It So It Stays Up?
Find two wall studs 60 cm apart, or use 10 kg rated hollow wall anchors if studs are not where you want them. Screw the U brackets to the studs, then set the pipe in and tighten. How Often Does a Vertical Pipe Need Water?
Top water until you see it reach the bottom cap, then stop. In summer that is every 2 to 3 days; in spring, every 4 to 5 days.
