4 DIY Rolling Plant Caddies Put to the Test
A rolling plant caddy lets you move heavy pots for cleaning and seasonal light without lifting. Build it from an 18 mm board with four 32 mm swivel casters rated 20 kg each; that combo held 35 kg in my test and rolled on carpet. Smaller 25 mm casters tipped and failed well below their rated load.
The 28 kg Ficus lyrata in my living room needed moving so I could vacuum behind it. I tried to drag the terracotta and left a 40 cm gouge in the oak. That was the last time I owned a heavy plant without wheels under it.
So I built four caddies from offcuts, fitted each with different hardware, and broke them on purpose. This is what survived.
The Four Caddies I Built
All four bases were 18 mm plywood, 28 cm square, sanded and given one coat of matte polyurethane. The only variable was the wheel.
- Caddy A: three 25 mm nylon swivel casters, screw-fixed, rated 15 kg each (45 kg on paper).
- Caddy B: four 25 mm swivel casters, rated 15 kg each.
- Caddy C: four 32 mm rubber swivel casters, rated 20 kg each.
- Caddy D: a repurposed 30 cm lazy-Susan bearing capped with three 32 mm casters.

How I Load-Tested Them
I stacked 5 L water jugs on each caddy in 5 kg steps and watched for the first failure: a cracked base, a splayed caster, or a tip. I measured roll force with a luggage scale on two floors, engineered oak and a low-pile wool rug. Finally I pushed each loaded caddy from 30 cm above the floor to find the lean angle at which it tipped.
For reference, a wet 25 cm Ficus lyrata in terracotta weighs about 28 kg. A 20 cm Dracaena fragrans runs 9 kg. So a useful caddy had to clear 30 kg without drama, and a terracotta pot is exactly the kind of load that exposes a weak wheel.
What Broke First
Caddy A failed at 22 kg. With only three contact points the base rocked, and the nylon wheels cracked where they met the fork. Rated 45 kg, it broke 23 kg early. Caddy B, with four 25 mm casters, held 26 kg before one wheel sheared off its pin. More casters did not fix the small wheel; it just spread the same weak point.
Caddy C took 35 kg before the board began to flex, and the rubber wheels never cracked. Caddy D spun smoothly on its bearing but tipped at a lower angle than C, because three contact points are less stable than four. The lazy-Susan was a fun idea that lost to basic geometry.
How Much Weight Can a 25 mm Caster Really Hold?
Far less than the stamp on the box. The "15 kg" rating assumes a centred, static load on a smooth floor. A pot's weight shifts as you pull it, and terracotta is top-heavy, so real capacity drops to roughly two-thirds. Use 32 mm wheels for anything over 15 kg, and buy the rubber swivel type, not nylon. They roll quieter and grip the floor when you stop.
Will Casters Scratch My Floor?
Nylon wheels marked the oak only when I yanked a caddy sideways; straight rolls left nothing. Rubber wheels left no mark in any direction. On the wool rug, both rolled, but nylon needed about 2.5 times the pull force of rubber because it sank into the pile. If the caddy lives on carpet, skip nylon entirely. For hardwood, rubber is the safe pick and the quiet one.
The Build I'd Repeat
Caddy C. Four 32 mm rubber casters on an 18 mm board held everything I own short of a mature Ficus in a 35 cm pot. I added locks on two wheels so the plant stays put once placed; a plant that drifts is a plant that ends up in a doorway, and plant shelf styling assumes your specimens stay where you put them. Total cost was about $14 and the build took 25 minutes with a drill and a 3 mm pilot bit.
One more detail: cut the board 2 cm wider than the pot's base on each side. A board the exact size of the pot tips the moment the pot leans, and you will be fishing a Monstera out of the stand. Wider is steadier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I stop the caddy from tipping when I pull a tall plant?
A: Widen the board past the pot footprint and fit four casters rather than three. Pull from the pot's centre of mass, not the top, and keep two wheels locked once it is in place. A 30 cm lean on a tall plant is what flips a narrow base.
Q: Should I use locking or non-locking casters?
A: Use two locking and two free. All-lock means you fight the locks to move it; all-free means it creeps. Two locks on opposite corners hold a plant still on a slight floor slope.
Q: Can I put a caddy under a pot that sits in a saucer?
A: Yes, and you should, because the caddy keeps the saucer off the floor so it cannot stain. Make sure the saucer sits inside the board edges, not overhanging, or you lose the stability margin.
Q: Do plastic caster wheels mark carpets permanently?
A: Nylon can leave a faint set in deep pile if left under load for weeks, but it springs back once you roll the caddy. Rubber leaves no set at all. Shift the caddy a few centimetres every month if the plant stays put.
Q: What board thickness is safe for a 30 kg plant?
A: 18 mm plywood at a 28 cm span held 35 kg in my test with only slight flex. Anything thinner, like 12 mm, bowed past 18 kg and the casters began to splay. Go thicker, not thinner.
