Almost every Venus flytrap sold in a supermarket dies within two months, and it is almost always the same three causes in combination: it was potted in ordinary compost, watered from the tap, and kept on a shelf with nowhere near enough light. The plant is not difficult. The conditions are just unusually specific, and none of them match what we do to a normal houseplant.

A mini bog garden fixes all three at once. It is one of the simplest builds in this whole category — a waterproof container, two ingredients, and a rule about water — and once it is running it needs less attention than most pot plants.

Why a Bog Garden and Not a Terrarium

This distinction matters enough to settle before buying anything.

Carnivorous bog plants evolved in permanently wet, sunlit, acidic, nutrient-poor ground. They catch insects precisely because the soil gives them nothing. Their roots are adapted to sit in standing water and to a substrate with essentially no available minerals.

A closed terrarium gives them the humidity but takes away the light and the air movement, and closed glass in bright light cooks. The classic supermarket flytrap arrives in a sealed plastic dome for shipping, people leave it there, and it rots. If you want a closed glass build for tropical plants instead, a bottle terrarium is a different project with different rules.

An open bog garden gives them the standing water and the light. That is the correct environment.

The Three Non-Negotiables

Everything else in this build is flexible. These three are not.

No nutrients in the substrate. Ordinary potting compost, John Innes, anything with added fertiliser, worm castings or lime will scorch the roots. Carnivorous plants have no mechanism for handling ambient soil nutrients, and the damage is usually irreversible within weeks.

No minerals in the water. Tap water is the second killer, and the slowest to be recognised because the plant declines over months rather than days. Dissolved minerals accumulate in a container with no drainage, since water only ever leaves by evaporation and the salts stay behind. Use rainwater, distilled water, or reverse-osmosis water. If you want a number, aim below roughly 50 ppm total dissolved solids — a cheap TDS meter costs very little and removes the guesswork.

Serious light. These are full-sun plants. A bright windowsill is the minimum and often is not enough, especially for flytraps and pitcher plants, which colour up properly only under strong light. Weak light produces floppy, all-green growth and traps that never close well. If your brightest window is mediocre, plan on a grow light from the start — the same fixture logic as in the terrarium lighting guide applies here, just with more intensity and no glass in the way.

Materials

  • A waterproof container with no drainage hole. A glazed ceramic bowl, a plastic storage tub, a deep window box with the holes sealed, or a wide glass vessel. Depth of 12–20 cm is ideal; below about 10 cm the water level swings too fast.
  • Sphagnum peat moss, plain, with no added fertiliser or wetting agent. Check the bag — "multipurpose" or "with added feed" is disqualifying.
  • Horticultural sand or perlite. Silica sand, lime-free. Not builder's sand, not beach sand — both carry minerals or salt.
  • Rainwater, distilled or RO water. Several litres to start.
  • Live sphagnum moss (optional, for the surface).
  • Plants — see below.

Two shopping notes. Peat is increasingly restricted for environmental reasons, and coir is the usual substitute for general potting — but coir carries salts and is not a reliable replacement here. If you want to avoid peat, look for a purpose-made peat-free carnivorous mix rather than improvising with coir. And check the sand bag for "lime-free" explicitly; many horticultural sands are limed.

The Build

1. Prepare the container. No drainage hole. If you are repurposing a planter that has one, seal it with silicone or set it inside a larger waterproof outer container. Rinse the container with your clean water — not tap.

2. Rinse the sand. Put the sand in a bucket, cover with clean water, agitate, pour off the cloudy water, repeat two or three times. This removes fines and any surface minerals. Skipping this step is a slow-acting mistake.

3. Mix the substrate. One part peat to one part rinsed sand by volume. Add clean water and mix thoroughly until it is uniformly wet — dry peat is hydrophobic and will float and refuse to absorb later. The finished mix should hold together when squeezed but not stream water. Wet peat and sand make a serious mess, so mix in a tub or on a fold-away potting tray rather than on a worktop.

4. Fill. Fill to about 3 cm below the rim, firming lightly. Do not compact hard; you want it dense enough to support roots but still open.

5. Plant. Make a hole with a finger or dibber, spread the roots downward, and set each plant at the depth it was growing before. Flytrap rhizomes should sit with the white bulb just below the surface and the growth point exposed. Wash all old compost off supermarket plants before planting — this is the single most valuable rescue step for a shop-bought flytrap.

6. Top-dress. A thin layer of live sphagnum looks good, keeps the surface stable, and indicates health — if the sphagnum is thriving, your water is clean enough.

7. Water in and set the level. Water from above once with clean water, then maintain 2–3 cm of standing water in the base. In practice this means the bottom fifth of the container is a reservoir.

What to Plant

Species choice is where indoor bog gardens are usually won or lost, because the most famous carnivorous plants are temperate and need a genuine cold winter rest.

For a bog garden that lives indoors permanently, build it around subtropical sundews and butterworts. They need no dormancy, tolerate ordinary room temperatures year round, and a Cape sundew is genuinely hard to kill once the water and substrate are right.

If you want flytraps and Sarracenia — and they are the reason most people start — plan the dormancy in. From late autumn they need roughly three to four months at around 2–10°C with reduced light. Practically that means an unheated porch, a garage window, a sheltered balcony, or moving the whole container outdoors in a mild climate. Bear in mind that a filled bog garden is heavy — substrate plus standing water in a 40 cm container runs to well over 15 kg — so if it has to move twice a year, build it on a wheeled plant caddy from the start. A flytrap kept warm and bright all year will usually survive one or two years and then exhaust itself. This is the most common cause of the "it did well for ages and then just died" story.

Butterworts deserve a specific mention for anyone who keeps other houseplants: they are extremely effective at catching fungus gnats, so a bog garden on the same shelf as your regular collection does a small amount of pest control for free.

Running It

Water. Keep 2–3 cm in the base at all times and top up as it evaporates — with clean water only. Once or twice a year, flush the container by watering heavily from above until water overflows, which carries accumulated salts out. Let the level drop slightly lower in winter, but never let the substrate dry.

Feeding. Do not fertilise, and do not add anything to the water. Indoors the plants may catch fewer insects than outside, which is fine; they will grow more slowly and survive. If you want to feed, a couple of small dried insects placed on a trap every few weeks is plenty. Never feed meat, cheese or anything from a kitchen — it rots and kills the trap.

Light. Six or more hours of direct sun, or 12–14 hours under a strong LED. Sundews should look visibly dewy; if the dew dries up permanently, light or humidity is too low or the water is too mineral-rich.

Trimming. Cut dead leaves and spent traps off at the base with scissors. Flowering exhausts small plants, so on a first-year flytrap it is worth snipping the flower stalk. And resist triggering flytraps to watch them close — each closure costs the plant energy and a trap only has a limited number of cycles.

Algae. A green film on the surface usually means too much light on bare wet substrate rather than a water problem. A sphagnum top-dressing shades it out.

Do that and a bog garden is one of the lowest-maintenance things you can keep — it wants standing water and to be left alone, which is a rare combination in indoor gardening.
