A padded envelope arrived on a Tuesday with 2,000 live animals inside it, and a leaflet telling me to release them within 18 hours. My postman had left it in full sun on a doorstep. That is the part nobody mentions in the reviews.

I had wanted to test biological control indoors for a while. Every article I found was written for greenhouses with 2,000 m² of tomatoes and a humidity controller. Nobody seemed to have run it on eight houseplants in a flat with radiators. So I did, twice, and got two completely different results.

What Actually Turns Up in the Sachet

Not what most people picture. Predatory mites are tan or pale orange, about 0.5 mm, and faster than their prey. Under a 30x loupe they move with obvious purpose while spider mites drift.

The four sold for indoor use do different jobs:

  • Phytoseiulus persimilis eats two-spotted spider mites and nothing else. A specialist. It eats about 5 adult mites or 20 eggs a day, then starves once the prey is gone.
  • Neoseiulus californicus is the generalist. Slower at clearing a heavy outbreak, but it survives on pollen and thrips larvae between meals, so it persists on the plant.
  • Amblyseius swirskii targets thrips larvae and whitefly, not spider mites. Wrong tool for webbing.
  • Stratiolaelaps scimitus lives in the top 2 cm of substrate and eats fungus gnat larvae, which makes it a soil product rather than a leaf one, and a real alternative to the drenches in dealing with fungus gnats.

They arrive in a bottle of vermiculite carrier or in slow-release paper sachets you hang on a stem. The bottle version releases everything at once. The sachets breed inside and trickle out over 4 to 6 weeks, which suits houseplants better.

Do Predatory Mites Clear an Indoor Spider Mite Problem?

In my bathroom, yes, decisively. On my south windowsill, no.

Trial one, bathroom shelf. Six plants, all with confirmed two-spotted mites: a Calathea orbifolia, two Alocasia zebrina, a Dracaena marginata, and two Epipremnum aureum. Conditions 22 to 25 °C, humidity 65 to 78 percent thanks to daily showers. I counted live mites on four marked leaves per plant with a loupe before release, then every three days.

Starting count: 34 to 61 mites per marked leaf. I released 2,000 P. persimilis, roughly 300 per plant, tapping the carrier onto the upper leaf surface.

  • Day 3: predators visible on five of six plants. Prey counts unchanged.
  • Day 7: counts down to 12 to 20 per leaf. New webbing had stopped.
  • Day 12: 2 to 6 per leaf. I found predator eggs, which are oval and translucent, along the midrib.
  • Day 19: zero live spider mites on 20 of 24 marked leaves. The predators died out over the next fortnight with nothing to eat.

Nineteen days, no spraying, no leaf damage. That result surprised me more than I expected it to.

Trial two, windowsill. Same species, same supplier, three plants, 27 °C but 38 to 45 percent humidity in a heated room. The predators were gone by day 6 and the spider mite population doubled. Total waste of £16.

The difference is humidity. P. persimilis eggs desiccate below roughly 60 percent relative humidity, while spider mites breed faster in dry air. Dry heat is exactly the condition that causes the outbreak in the first place, so the plants that most need help are often the ones where predators struggle.

Why Did My First Release Fail?

Three reasons, and I made all of them the first time round.

I had sprayed neem nine days earlier. Azadirachtin residue is not selective, and it suppresses predatory mites for two to three weeks after application. If you plan a release, stop all sprays at least 14 days beforehand, longer for pyrethroids, which can persist for a month or more. Timing matters as much as the product, which is a theme in the neem oil guide.

I released too few, too late. The label ratio for a light infestation is around 2 to 5 predators per infested leaf. Mine was well past light. Once webbing covers a growing tip, predators struggle to move through it, so hose the worst leaves down first and cut off the two or three most heavily webbed ones before releasing.

I checked with the wrong expectation. Biological control does not produce a satisfying overnight kill. The first week looks like nothing is happening. I nearly reached for a spray on day 5, which would have wiped out the animals I had paid for.

There is a fourth failure I only avoided by luck. Ants farm spider mites and honeydew producers, and they will actively remove predators from a plant, so deal with any ant trail before releasing, as covered in ants in houseplant soil.

Cost, Timing, and When I Skip Them Entirely

A tube of 2,000 P. persimilis runs £14 to £22 delivered, sachets a little more. That covers six to eight medium houseplants. Roughly the price of two bottles of insecticidal soap, and unlike soap it needs no repeat application, no dripping leaves, and no waiting for a plant to dry out.

When I use them: humid rooms, plants with fiddly leaf architecture where spray coverage is hopeless, homes with cats or small children where I would rather not aerosolise anything, and any case where I have already run three spray rounds and the pests came back regardless, which is the pattern described in why pests keep coming back.

When I skip them: humidity under 55 percent with no way to raise it, a single infested plant I can carry to the shower and treat in ten minutes, any recent pesticide use, and outbreaks on a plant I was ready to compost anyway. Contact treatments still make sense in those cases, and the schedule in dealing with spider mites works fine.

One habit that has saved me more money than any product: three weeks of isolation for every new plant, described in quarantining new plants. Predators are a good repair, not a good routine.

Q: Will predatory mites infest my house or bite me?

A: No. They cannot feed on anything but other small arthropods and pollen, they do not bite people or pets, and they die within days once prey runs out. I have never found one off a plant.

Q: How do I know the ones I released are still alive?

A: Look along the midrib and leaf edge with a 30x loupe about four days in. Predators are pear-shaped, shiny, and noticeably quicker than spider mites. Finding their oval eggs is the better sign, because it means they are breeding rather than just surviving.

Q: Can I use predatory mites and insecticidal soap at the same time?

A: Not on the same plant. Soap kills on contact and does not distinguish between species. If a plant is bad enough to need soap, treat it, wait seven days for the residue to clear, then release onto the neighbours instead.

Q: My sachet arrived with everything dead. Is that normal?

A: It happens more than suppliers admit, usually from heat in transit. Order for a weekday delivery, avoid heatwaves, and open the tube over white paper to check for movement within an hour of arrival. Reputable suppliers replace a dead batch.

Q: Do I need to raise the humidity before releasing?

A: Above roughly 60 percent, yes, or the eggs shrivel. Grouping plants together and running a humidifier for the treatment period is enough. Misting is not, since it dries within the hour.

Predatory mites are not a gimmick and they are not a miracle. They are livestock. Give them 22 °C, 65 percent humidity, no residue, and a fortnight of patience, and they clear a spider mite outbreak more thoroughly than three rounds of spraying ever did for me.
