One pedantic but useful point: reindeer moss is not a moss. Materials

On adhesive choice. Low-temp hot glue is right. High-temp scorches and discolours the moss on contact. Building It

5. Build in height variation. A flat panel is a rug. Stack a second layer of reindeer moss in two or three areas so the surface rises 3 to 4 cm above the base plane. 6. Fill the gaps last. Turn the panel and view it from an oblique angle — every gap shows from the side even when the face looks solid. Tuck small sheet moss pieces into them.

7. Finish the edges. Wrap the moss slightly around the board edge so no substrate is visible from the side, or fit the frame.

Total working time is about two to three hours, most of it fluffing and layout.

Where to Hang It, and Where Not To

Preserved moss has two enemies, and neither is neglect.

Direct sunlight fades the dye. Preserved moss is dyed as part of the glycerine process, and those dyes are not UV-stable. A panel in a south-facing beam visibly yellows within a year. Interior walls, hallways and windowless rooms are ideal, which is exactly the placement problem the panel is solving.

Humidity damages it from both directions. Below about 30 percent the glycerine cannot hold enough moisture and the moss turns brittle and sheds when touched. Sustained high humidity makes the moss absorb moisture, go limp, and risk mould developing in the adhesive layer.

The practical target is 40 to 55 percent, and that number is not really set by the moss — it is set by your house. Aim for 40 to 55 percent: dry enough to satisfy the mould guidance, damp enough to keep the glycerine supple.

That upper limit rules out the placements people most often propose: directly above a shower, or in an unventilated bathroom. A well-ventilated bathroom is usually fine; a steamy one is not.

Maintenance is genuinely nothing. Do not water it — water dissolves glycerine and ruins the treatment permanently. Dust it once or twice a year on the lowest vacuum setting with a brush attachment held slightly off the surface, or use a hairdryer on cool.

Expect five to ten years indoors away from sun. It fades gradually rather than failing suddenly.

If You Want Living Plants on the Wall Instead

Reasonable ambition, different project. A preserved panel cannot become a living one — the substrate has no water retention and the moss is dead.

For genuinely living vertical greenery, a pegboard plant wall holds real potted plants and lets you water each one individually, which is the practical version of the idea.
