Perlite vs Pumice: Which Drainage Mix Wins?
Perlite and pumice both open up soil for drainage, but perlite weighs about a fifth as much and floats to the surface over time, while pumice stays put and holds slightly more water. Use perlite for cheap, light succulent mixes and pumice for heavy top-growth plants, bonsai, and pots you never want to tip over.
Here is a number that settles most of this argument before it starts: a full 4 litre bag of perlite weighs roughly 200 grams, and the same volume of pumice weighs close to 1 kilogram. Five times heavier. That single fact decides which one belongs in your pots more often than any drainage chart does.
Both are volcanic. Both hold air and water in a fast-draining structure. People treat them as interchangeable, then wonder why their perlite keeps rising to the top of the pot like foam on a latte. They are not the same material, and once you know the three differences that matter, the choice gets easy.
What Actually Separates Perlite and Pumice?
Perlite is volcanic glass that has been heated to around 900°C until the trapped water flashes to steam and pops it, like popcorn. That is why it is white, feather-light, and crumbly. Density lands near 0.1 g/cm3.
Pumice is raw volcanic rock full of gas bubbles, mined and screened, not cooked. It is grey to tan, gritty, and hard. Density sits around 0.5 g/cm3, and the particles do not crush between your fingers the way perlite does.
Both are close to pH neutral, roughly 7.0 to 7.5, so neither one shifts your soil chemistry. Both are chemically inert, meaning they add no nutrients. Their whole job is physical: create air gaps so roots can breathe and water can leave. The difference is entirely in weight, durability, and how they behave over months in a pot.
Which One Holds More Water?
Pumice, but the gap is smaller than people claim. In my own bench tests with 4 to 6 mm grade, pumice held about 35% of its volume in water after draining; perlite held closer to 25 to 30%. Both release that water back to roots as the mix dries, which is exactly what you want in a fast mix.
The practical difference shows up between waterings. A pumice-heavy mix stays evenly damp a day or two longer than a perlite one at the same ratio. For a Sansevieria trifasciata or an Echeveria that you want bone dry between drinks, perlite's faster dry-down is an advantage. For a Monstera deliciosa or a young aroid that sulks when it dries hard, pumice's slightly longer hold keeps growth steadier.
Neither turns to sludge. That matters, because the alternative amendment most beginners reach for, coco coir or extra peat, breaks down and compacts within a year. Pumice lasts for many years. Perlite lasts one to three before enough of it crushes to dust and needs topping up.
Does Perlite Really Float Out of the Pot?
Yes, and it drives people up the wall. Because perlite is so light, top-watering and normal settling push it upward until your pot looks like it is dusted with polystyrene. It is cosmetic, not harmful, but it does mean the drainage is slowly migrating away from the root zone where you need it.
Pumice stays where you mix it. Its weight anchors it through the soil column, so a pumice blend keeps its structure from top to bottom for the life of the planting. This is the real reason bonsai growers and serious succulent collectors pay more for pumice: the mix they build on day one is the mix they still have two years later.
There is a second, quieter problem with perlite: dust. Dry perlite throws a fine silica dust that you should not breathe. I wet the whole bag with a spray bottle before I open and mix it, every time. Pumice is far less dusty, though a quick rinse in a sieve still clears the fines and stops them clogging the bottom of the pot.
Which Should You Use, and at What Ratio?
Match the material to the plant and to your own habits. Here is the split I actually use:
- Reach for perlite when you want a cheap, light mix and you tend to overwater. It is ideal for hanging baskets and wall shelves where every kilogram counts, and for big batches of seed-starting or cutting mix. A standard succulent blend is roughly 1 part potting soil to 1 part perlite. For a fast succulent mix, push it to 50% or more.
- Reach for pumice for top-heavy plants that tip over, for bonsai and caudex succulents, and for any pot you want to build once and forget. Use 25 to 40% by volume in a general aroid mix, or up to 50% for cactus and Lithops. It also wins outdoors, where wind and heavy watering would blast perlite away.
- Either works for pothos, Philodendron, and most forgiving houseplants. Pick on price and weight.
Cost runs perlite's way. A 4 litre bag of perlite runs about 4 to 6 dollars; the same volume of horticultural pumice is often 10 to 15. Over a big collection that adds up, which is why plenty of growers use perlite for bulk mixes and save pumice for their prize plants. If you are unsure whether your current mix drains fast enough at all, the fix is usually more of either one, plus a check on your watering rhythm covered in how often to water succulents.
A quick word on the classic mistake: do not use either as a bottom drainage layer under regular soil. A layer of chunky material below fine soil raises the waterlogged zone toward the roots instead of lowering it. Mix the amendment through the whole pot, as I explain in repotting succulents step by step. Q: Can I mix perlite and pumice together in the same pot?
A: Yes, and I often do. A blend gives you pumice's staying power plus perlite's low cost, and the pumice weight helps hold the perlite down so less of it floats up. A 50/50 amendment portion works well for a mixed shelf of succulents and aroids.
Q: Will pumice's weight compact my soil over time?
A: No. Pumice is hard and rigid, so it holds its air gaps rather than crushing. The compaction people blame on grit is almost always the organic part of the mix, the coir or peat, breaking down around it.
Q: Is the white dust on perlite dangerous?
A: It is fine silica dust, and you should avoid inhaling it. Wet the bag with a spray bottle before mixing and wear a mask if you are doing a large batch. Once the perlite is damp and in the pot, it poses no ongoing risk.
Q: My perlite keeps rising to the surface. Is my plant in trouble?
A: Not directly, but the drainage is migrating out of the root zone. Top-dress with a thin layer of grit to weigh it down, or switch to pumice next time you repot if it keeps happening.
Q: Does either one lower the risk of root rot on its own?
A: They reduce it by adding air and speeding drainage, but they do not cure overwatering. A gritty mix in a pot with a drainage hole plus sensible watering is the real defence, and if rot has already set in, see deal with root rot.
There is no universal winner here, just a right tool for the plant and the grower. Pick perlite when you want light, cheap, and fast-drying, and you do not mind topping it up. Pick pumice when you want a mix that stays structured for years, anchors a top-heavy plant, and shrugs off heavy watering. When in doubt, blend them.
