LECA vs Soil for Houseplants: Which Wins?
LECA (expanded clay pebbles) beats soil for people who overwater, fight fungus gnats, or want to see the water level. Soil wins on cost, forgiveness, and hands-off feeding. LECA needs pH 5.5 to 6.5, dilute nutrients at 0.6 to 1.0 EC, and a monthly flush. Neither is magic. Match the method to your habits.
I switched a Epipremnum aureum from soil to LECA on a whim, killed a monstera cutting doing the same thing two weeks later, then spent a year figuring out why one worked and one flopped. LECA is not a shortcut. It is a different set of rules. Learn the rules and it is excellent. Ignore them and it drowns roots just as fast as bad soil.

What Is LECA and How Is It Different From Soil?
LECA stands for Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate: little fired clay balls, 8 to 16mm across, riddled with air pockets. It holds no nutrients of its own. That is the whole point. In soil, the mix stores water and feeds the plant slowly as organic matter breaks down. In LECA, the pebbles just wick water up from a reservoir in the bottom of the pot, and you supply every nutrient the plant gets through the water.
So the real difference is not "dirt versus clay." It is who controls feeding and moisture. Soil buffers your mistakes. LECA hands you the controls and expects you to know what you are doing. If you have ever fought soggy root rot, that hand-off is either a relief or a trap.
Does LECA Really Stop Overwatering and Fungus Gnats?
Mostly, yes, and this is LECA's strongest argument. Fungus gnats breed in damp organic matter. LECA is inorganic and the top layer stays dry, so the gnats lose their nursery. In my kitchen, a chronic gnat problem on three plants dropped to zero within about four weeks of switching, with no sprays.
Overwatering is trickier. LECA cannot get waterlogged the way dense soil does, because air fills the gaps between pebbles even when the reservoir is full. Roots sitting directly in stagnant water still rot, though. The fix is simple: keep the water level at roughly one-third the pot height, never touching the main root mass, and let the pebbles wick upward. Get that ratio right and overwatering basically stops being a category of problem.
What Does LECA Cost, and Is It Cheaper Than Soil?
Upfront, LECA loses. A litre of decent potting mix runs about $0.50 to $1.50. A litre of LECA is $1.50 to $4, and you need net pots, an outer cache pot, and liquid nutrients. My starter cost for one medium plant was roughly $12 to $18 versus $2 in soil.
Long term, LECA claws some of it back. You rinse and reuse the pebbles for years, so you stop buying bags of soil every repot. But you keep buying nutrients, so call it a wash over time rather than a saving. If cost is your deciding factor, soil wins and it is not close. Buy LECA for the control, not the economics. A bag of quality hydroponic clay pebbles is the one purchase you will not regret if you commit.
How Hard Is LECA to Feed and Maintain?
This is where soil pulls ahead for busy people. Soil-grown plants coast for weeks between feeds. LECA plants get nothing you do not give them, so you mix nutrients into every watering.
My working recipe: a balanced hydroponic nutrient at 0.6 to 1.0 EC for most foliage plants, pH adjusted to 5.5 to 6.5 so the roots can actually absorb it. Top up the reservoir every 5 to 10 days as it drops, and once a month flush the whole pot under the tap for 30 seconds to wash out mineral salts, because those salts build up and scorch roots if you let them. Skipping the flush is the number one reason people say LECA "stopped working." A cheap moisture meter is less useful here since you can see the water line, but a pH pen is not optional.
Compare that to soil: water when the top 3 to 5cm dries, feed a diluted liquid fertiliser every 2 to 4 weeks in growth, done. If you travel a lot or forget things, soil forgives you. LECA does not.
Which Plants Thrive in LECA, and Which Sulk?
Match the method to the species. Aroids love LECA: pothos (Epipremnum aureum), monstera (Monstera deliciosa), philodendrons, and Spathiphyllum wallisii all transition well because their thick roots handle constant moisture and high oxygen. Most rooted cuttings adapt faster than established plants.
Plants that want a real dry-down sulk or rot. Succulents, Sansevieria trifasciata, cacti, and Zamioculcas zamiifolia are poor candidates because LECA keeps humidity at the roots too steady for them. Ferns can go either way. If you want passive hydro without the fuss of a reservoir pot, the Kratky method and deep water culture are close cousins worth reading before you commit.
How Do I Actually Switch a Plant From Soil to LECA?
Do it right and the transition failure rate drops sharply. This is the exact sequence that stopped me killing cuttings.
- Rinse LECA first. New pebbles are dusty. Rinse until the water runs clear, then soak them 12 to 24 hours so they arrive pre-charged with water.
- Bare-root the plant gently. Wash every scrap of soil off under lukewarm water. Leftover soil rots in the reservoir and reintroduces gnats.
- Trim damaged roots. Snip mushy or brown roots back to firm tissue with clean scissors.
- Pot into a net pot inside a cache pot. Nestle roots among the pebbles, keep the crown above the waterline.
- Start with plain water for 1 to 2 weeks. Let new water roots form before you add nutrients, then ramp up to full-strength feed.
Expect the plant to drop a leaf or two while it grows water-adapted roots. That is normal, not failure. Avoiding the common hydroponic mistakes at this stage matters more than anything else.

Q: My LECA plant's roots turned brown and slimy after switching. What happened?
A: Two usual causes. Either leftover soil fouled the reservoir, or the water level touched the main root ball so the crown sat in stagnant water. Rinse everything, cut the slimy roots back to firm tissue, and reset the water to about one-third pot height so the pebbles wick up instead of the roots sitting submerged.
Q: How often do I change the water and nutrients in LECA?
A: Top up the reservoir every 5 to 10 days as it evaporates, do a full flush and fresh nutrient mix roughly every 2 to 4 weeks, and rinse the pebbles under the tap monthly to clear salt buildup. In hot rooms above 26°C, top up more often because evaporation speeds up.
Q: Can I reuse LECA when I repot?
A: Yes, that is a real advantage. Tip the old pebbles out, pick off dead roots, rinse them, then sterilise by boiling for 10 minutes or soaking in a weak bleach solution and rinsing well. Reused LECA performs the same as new once it is clean.
Q: Why is my LECA growing white crust on the pebbles?
A: That crust is mineral salt from your nutrients and hard tap water. It is a signal you are under-flushing. Rinse the whole pot thoroughly, flush monthly from now on, and if your tap water is very hard, mix nutrients with filtered or rainwater to slow the buildup.
LECA is not better than soil, and soil is not better than LECA. They reward different owners. If you overwater, hate gnats, travel predictably, and enjoy dialing in pH and EC, LECA gives you clean control and healthier roots for it. If you want cheap, forgiving, plant-and-forget care, stay in soil and water on a rhythm. I keep aroids in LECA and everything thirsty-then-dry in soil, and both thrive because each plant got the method that fits it.
