The toxicity warning points the other way, at mammals. Eaten, these mushrooms cause significant stomach upset in people and pets, and their sunny colour makes them oddly tempting to toddlers and bored cats. This is the one genuinely non-negotiable action item: if anyone in the household explores the world mouth-first, pick every cap the day it appears, with a tissue or gloves, and bin it.   2. Scrape and replace the top 5 cm of mix. The mycelium is densest near the warm, moist surface. Refresh that layer with fresh mix or, better, a gritty topping that dries fast.
  3. Let the surface dry to a depth of 2 to 3 cm between waterings. Bottom-watering helps here, since it keeps the surface driest. Fruiting needs sustained surface moisture; deny it and the fungus stays vegetative and invisible.
