Last month I watered a Pilea peperomioides and a dozen white specks pinged off the soil like popcorn. Years ago I would have drenched the pot in insecticide. Instead I got a hand lens and a slice of raw potato, because the three white bugs that show up in potting soil need three different responses, and one needs no response at all.

I have run this identification on 14 of my own pots and a stack of reader photos, and the pattern holds: most white-bug panics turn out to be harmless. The one that is not hides below the soil line, which is why people treat the wrong pest for months. Here is my triage.

Do the Bugs Jump, Crawl, or Stay Still?

One behaviour check sorts 90% of cases. Water the pot or breathe gently on the soil surface, then watch for ten seconds:

The jump is the giveaway. Springtails have a spring-loaded tail appendage (the furcula) that flings them several centimetres, which no mite or mealybug can do. If nothing on the surface moves but your plant is wilting anyway, you need to look underground, and I will get to that.

Fungus gnat larvae also read as "tiny white worms", but they are legless, translucent maggots with shiny black heads in the top 3 cm of wet soil. Adults flying around the pot rim mean a different problem with its own treatment plan.

Are Springtails Actually Hurting Your Plant?

No, and I will go further: I stopped treating them entirely. Springtails eat fungi, algae, and decaying organic matter. They do not have mouthparts capable of chewing healthy roots. NC State Extension lists them as decomposers, not plant pests, and in a terrarium they are sold on purpose as a clean-up crew.

What a springtail bloom does tell you is that the pot stays wet long enough to grow the fungus they eat. A population explosion is a moisture report. When I let a chronically damp Calathea pot dry to 3 cm depth between waterings, the visible springtail count dropped from dozens per watering to near zero in about three weeks, no chemicals involved.

Why Are There Mites in My Potting Soil?

Because potting soil is full of food. White or tan soil mites (mostly oribatids) eat fungal threads and decomposing bark, and they arrive in the bag. When I inspected a fresh, unopened bag of commercial mix under a lens, I found them within minutes; bagged soil carries more passengers than most growers expect.

Two reassurances. First, soil mites are not spider mites; spider mites live on leaves, spin webbing, and stipple foliage, while soil mites stay in the pot and ignore the plant. Second, populations are self-limiting: they track the decaying matter available, and a fresh, fast-draining mix supports very few.

Act only if the numbers disgust you: repot into a mix with less bark and compost, water less, and top-dress with 1 cm of coarse sand to dry the surface layer where they graze. Every insecticide recommended for soil mites is overkill for an animal that is improving your soil structure.

How Do You Confirm Root Mealybugs Without Repotting Everything?

This is the one that matters, because root mealybugs (Rhizoecus falcifer is the common greenhouse species) do feed on roots, and by the time a plant wilts and yellows, the colony is established. The above-ground symptoms mimic overwatering and underwatering at once, which is why the diagnosis gets missed.

Two low-effort checks before you disturb any roots:

  1. The pot-wall check. Slide the root ball halfway out of a plastic nursery pot. Root mealybugs leave chalky, blue-white waxy deposits along the inside of the pot wall and the outer root surface. The wax looks like someone dusted the roots with flour that will not brush off.
  2. The potato-slice test. Bury a 1 cm slice of raw potato 2-3 cm deep and check it after 24-48 hours. Root mealybugs and other root feeders migrate to it. A clean slice two days running is decent evidence of a clean pot.

If you confirm them, act on the whole plant, not the soil surface. Bare-root the plant, wash every trace of old soil off under running water, trim mushy roots, then dunk the root system in water held at 49 °C for 10 minutes (a thermometer is mandatory; 49 °C kills the mealybugs, sustained temperatures much above that cook roots). Repot into fresh mix in a disinfected pot. I pair this with a systemic-free follow-up: insecticidal soap drench at repotting, repeated after 14 days.

Then quarantine. Root mealybugs walk between pots on shared saucers and trays, one more argument for isolating new arrivals for a month before they join the shelf.

Which Treatment Matches Which Bug?

The short matrix, since mismatched treatment is the most common mistake I see:

  • Springtails: dry the pot down, fix drainage. No pesticide.
  • Soil mites: ignore, or refresh the mix if the population offends you. No pesticide.
  • Root mealybugs: bare-root wash, 49 °C water dip, fresh soil, soap drench, 4-week quarantine and re-inspection.
  • Not sure yet: potato slice, hand lens, and 48 hours of patience beat any spray bought in a panic.

The US EPA's safer pest control guidance makes the same point: identify first, because the least-toxic effective option depends on the actual pest. Q: The white bugs jump, but my plant is still wilting. Coincidence?

A: Probably two separate facts. Springtails flag constantly damp soil, and damp soil causes root rot, which causes wilting. The springtails are the smoke alarm, not the fire. Brown, soft, or smelly roots mean rot; the fix is drying the pot and trimming damage, not treating the insects.

Q: Can root mealybugs spread to the leaves and become regular mealybugs?

A: No. They are different species with different habits. Rhizoecus stays on roots and in soil its whole life cycle. Above-ground mealybugs (Planococcus citri and relatives) can wander down to upper roots, but a soil colony of true root mealybugs will not colonise your stems.

Q: Will letting the pot dry out completely kill root mealybugs?

A: No. Drought stresses your plant more than the pest. Root mealybugs tolerate dry spells inside their waxy coating and resume feeding when you water. Only physical removal plus the hot-water dip reliably clears them; drying alone just adds drought damage to insect damage.

Q: I found white bugs in an unopened bag of potting mix. Should I return it?

A: If they crawl slowly, they are soil mites and the bag is fine to use; nearly all commercial mixes contain some. If anything in the bag jumps, also fine. I would only discard a bag showing waxy stationary clusters, and in three years of checking bags I have never found root mealybugs in a sealed one.
