A reader emailed me a photo of her dead Calathea next to a moisture meter reading 7 out of 10. "The meter said moist, so I never watered. Why is it crispy?" One question: where was the probe? Answer: 3 cm deep, at the pot edge, in the same hole every time.

There was the problem. The top 3 cm at the pot edge held old irrigation salts and a little condensation. Ten centimetres down, at the roots, the mix was bone dry. The meter was not broken. It was answering a question nobody should ask: how wet is the top corner of the pot?

I have tested a dozen meters, cheap analog pin types and 30-dollar digital ones. Nearly every "my meter lies" complaint traces back to the same seven mistakes.

Why Does My Moisture Meter Say Wet When the Soil Is Dry?

Three causes, in order of how often I see them.

Salt buildup. Analog meters do not measure water. They measure electrical conductivity between two metal strips, and dissolved fertiliser salts conduct electricity even in barely damp soil. A pot fed every two weeks without flushing can read 6 or 7 when the mix is dry enough to stress roots. Fix: flush with water equal to 3 to 4 times the pot volume every 2 to 3 months, and treat readings in heavily fertilised pots as one point high.

Probe contact gaps. In chunky aroid mixes with bark and perlite, the probe often sits in an air pocket. Air reads dry, a wet bark chip reads wet, and neither tells you about the root zone. Fix: insert slowly, and if the needle jumps as you push, average 2 to 3 insertion points.

Reading too fast. Analog needles need 30 to 60 seconds to settle; digital models often want longer. Pull the probe after 5 seconds and you are reading noise. Fix: insert, walk away, come back in a minute.

How Deep Should the Probe Actually Go?

Two-thirds of the pot's depth. That is the rule, and almost nobody follows it.

Roots drink from the bottom half of the pot. The top 3 to 5 cm dries in a day or two while the bottom can stay saturated for a week. In a 15 cm pot, the probe tip should sit around 10 cm down. In a 25 cm floor-plant pot you want 16 to 17 cm, which means a probe at least 20 cm long. Plenty of cheap meters ship with 12 cm probes, fine for a windowsill herb, useless for a Ficus lyrata in a deep planter.

One Reading Is Not Data: Probe Multiple Spots

Water does not spread evenly through a pot. It channels. In a root-bound pot, irrigation water runs down the gap between root ball and pot wall and out the drainage hole, leaving the core dry. Probe the edge and you read 8. Probe the centre, 5 cm from the stem, and you read 2. Both are true; only one matters.

My routine on anything bigger than a 15 cm pot: three insertions in a triangle around the stem, each halfway between stem and rim, and take the lowest reading seriously. A dry core with a wet edge means water is bypassing the root ball; the fix is bottom-watering for 20 to 30 minutes, not another splash on top. Also wipe the probe between pots, or you carry skewed readings and fungus gnat eggs from plant to plant.

Are You Reading the Scale for the Wrong Plant?

The 1-to-10 scale on an analog meter is not a command. "3 = water" on the dial assumes an average tropical in an average mix. Real thresholds differ:

Write the target number on a plant label. Guessing from memory across 20 pots is how the fern gets succulent treatment.

One more scale trap: peat-heavy mixes read wetter than airy bark mixes at the same actual water content, because the probe gets better contact. Calibrate per plant: probe right after a thorough watering and note that number as your personal "10", probe again when the plant clearly needs water, and use those two anchors instead of the printed dial.

Can You Leave a Moisture Meter in the Pot?

No, and this mistake kills meters fastest. Analog pin meters are designed for a 60-second measurement, then removal. Left in moist soil, the probes corrode within 2 to 4 weeks and read permanently low. I ran this test on two identical meters: the one left in a pot drifted 2 full points low in a month; the stored one still matched a reference digital meter.

Store the meter dry, probe wiped. If the probe shows rust or white crust, scrub it with fine steel wool; if readings still disagree between a known-wet and a known-dry pot, the meter is done. When Should You Distrust the Meter Entirely?

A meter is one input, not a verdict. Distrust it when it contradicts the pot itself.

Lift test: a 15 cm plastic pot that feels light like a coffee cup is dry, whatever the dial says. Water is the weight. When meter, weight, and finger agree, act with confidence. When they disagree, the meter is the one most likely wrong, for one of the seven reasons above.
